Is PRP Hair Treatment a Permanent Solution for Hair Loss?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), also known as autologous conditioned plasma, is a concentration of platelet-rich plasma protein that is derived from an individual’s blood. The blood is centrifuged to remove red blood cells and separate plasma. This concentrated blood plasma contains several growth factors and cytokines that stimulate the healing of soft tissues.

In dermatology, it is effectively said to treat androgenic alopecia (chronic hair loss disorder) and skin rejuvenation. PRP for hair loss is being hyped today due to the high PRP hair treatment success rate. PRP injects are said to trigger natural hair growth and maintain growth by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle.

In the same light, we’ll discuss whether or not PRP hair treatment is a permanent solution.

Is PRP Hair Loss Treatment Permanent?

PRP treatment is not a cure for hair loss; instead, it’s a treatment that helps to slow the progression of hair loss and promotes the growth of new hair. No doubt it prevents hair loss, but an individual may need multiple PRP sessions for hair growth and maintenance of the same. It temporarily restores the ability of hair follicles to grow, and with multiple sessions, one can keep up the same rate.

Hence, PRP cannot be considered a permanent or one-time solution. It does provide better results than minoxidil, and thus, can be considered a better alternative. The results of PRP treatment last for 1-3 years, depending on the individual’s condition.

PRP Therapy Process

It is a three-step process.

Step 1: Blood is drawn from an individual’s body (typically from the arm) and put into a centrifuge.

Step 2: 10 minutes after centrifugation, the blood separates into 3 layers-

  1. Platelet-poor plasma
  2. Platelet-rich plasma
  3. Red blood cell

Step 3: The platelet-rich plasma is drawn up into a syringe and then injected into an individual’s scalp. This leads to increased hair growth.

How Does PRP Treatment for Hair Loss Work?

Platelet α-granules release growth hormones like-

  1. Transforming growth factor (TGF) – Assists the development of the matrix between cells
  2. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) – Stimulate skin and blood vessel growth
  3. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) – Helps the formation of blood vessels
  4. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) – Increases the cell growth and formation of blood vessels
  5. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) – Regulates healthy and normal cell physiology
  6. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) – Helps specialized cell formation

These growth factors act on stem cells in the bulge area of the follicles, stimulating the development of new follicles and promoting neovascularization. In fact, primitive stem cells that come from the ectoderm are found in the bulge area. These stem cells make epidermal cells and sebaceous glands.

At the dermal papilla of the matrix, you can find germinating cells that come from the mesenchyme. Interactions between these two types of cells, as well as with growth factors that bind to them (PDGF, TGF-β, and VEGF), start the hair’s growth phase and lead to the formation of the follicular unit.

Simply speaking, PRP contains proteins that serve several functions like-

  1. Helping blood clots
  2. Encouraging cell growth

Should You Go for PRP For Hair Loss?

Yes. During the hair cycle, the dermal papilla cells live longer because PRP turns on anti apoptotic regulators like the Bcl-2 protein and Akt signaling. With PRP treatment, the FGF-7/-catenin signaling pathways may be turned on, which may help hair grow by causing follicular stem cells to change and by extending the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle.

It also seems to make the perifollicular vascular plexus bigger by making the levels of VEGF and PDGF go up, which can make blood vessels grow. Hence, it shows the positive effects of PRP as a hair loss treatment.

Conclusion

Though not permanent, PRP treatment is a promising solution. This treatment is also combined with hair transplant procedures to yield better results and quick healing. The anti-apoptotic effects of activated PRP have been suggested to contribute to hair growth.
